Christmas cards

A video showing hands decorating hand-painted Christmas baubles and other hanging decorations from Gudrun Sjödén in a warm crafting setting with dried oranges and ribbons.

Follow our step-by-step guide:

You’ll need:
•    Pre-folded cards or thick watercolour paper
•    Watercolour paints
•    Different size brushes
•    Water cup
•    Palette or a small plate to mix paint on
•    Pencil and rubber (for light sketches, optional)
•    Right size cup for making a circle
•    Newspaper or other protective covering for your table

1. Fold the paper into cards or place the right size of watercolour paper on a protected surface.
2. Carefully sketch your idea with a pencil, e.g. a simple circle for a bauble.
3. Mix the colours you want to use on the palette.
4. Paint the largest areas first. Start with the background and main shapes. Let the paint dry slightly between layers.
5. Then add smaller patterns, outlines and accents.
6. Lay the Christmas card flat until the paint is completely dry and will not smear.
7. When the card is dry, write a personal Christmas greeting inside or on the back.

 A useful tip!
•    Play with simple motifs
•    Repeat the same motif in different colours for faster results but still with a personal touch.
•    Work in layers. Let each layer dry before applying the next to achieve crisp shapes and avoid smudging.
•    Paint several cards simultaneously. Work in batches. Paint a small number of cards one after the other, leaving each to dry as you move to the next. A fun and efficient way of working!
