Gudrun’s essential stripe

Since the first sweater, we have made some 500,000 of them. With knitted stripes and organic cotton, this is a great example of a sustainable evergreen that never goes out of fashion. We have been working with Janis in Greece since 1992. He is just as passionate about the green wave as we are. My essential stripe cotton sweater is a classic. Over the years, it has been made a bit wider or slimmed, with a round neck or a boat neck. Whatever the style, this sweater is wonderful for life in the country.

The popular grandfather shirt was a Swedish equivalent to the Breton top. It was made of unbleached cotton jersey so that it could be boiled and had some buttons on the front to make it easy to pull on. A favourite among farmers, soldiers and labourers, the shirt had long sleeves as it was often worn with a woollen sweater in chilly Sweden. The grandfather shirt and Breton top have inspired me greatly. A great combination of performance and comfort!

The stripe is not a particularly complicated stitch and textile designs are often a combination of creativity and what the machines can achieve. I was doing stripes early on. Of course stripes were very fashionable. It started in the 1960s, with the new-found popularity of the classic blue-and-white striped Breton top. Rough, single-yarn, with an open end. The latter was important.
I wasn't the only designer who was inspired to go for stripes. Agnés B in France was one of the first to design the double stripe. Marimekko in Finland was also an early stripe designer. And there was me too.

These jersey-knit stripes are made from a soft and smooth fabric crafted from pure organic cotton, with every stage of the manufacturing chain certified as compliant with environmental standards. Enjoy this video in which designer Elvira tells us more about the soft knit fabric.

Our fit

We like mixing figure-fit with more generously cut fashion. That's why we have four different types of tailoring. You'll find information on the different types of fit in the detailed descriptions of each item. The choice of material also influences the amount of movement allowed by a garment. Knits and jersey-knits have more give in them than woven, less stretchy materials. That's why our weaves are often more generously tailored. For you to be as happy as possible with your purchases, we recommend that you spend a few moments taking your measurements and comparing them with our size chart.

Figure-fit
The garment is close fitting, with a maximum of 6 cm room for movement around the bust and maximum 3 cm around the hips.

Standard fit
The garment has 7-16 cm room for movement around the bust and 4-12 cm around the hips.

Generous fit
A free and easy fit with at least 17 cm room for movement around the bust and 13 cm or more around the hips.

Extra generous fit
Lots of room for movement, 31 cm or more around the bust.

Gudrun’s Good Guide
– A whole collection to take pride in.

We aim to have as many of our products as possible produced in an environmentally-friendly way, not just a limited and exclusive line. Over the decades, environmental awareness has evolved and gone in and out of fashion. From the 80s when eco-friendliness was tentative and virtually impossible, through the 90s when we launched our first organic collection, to today when green choices are obvious.

In the forest of eco-labelling systems, we felt that having our own label would make it easier for our customers to find their way around our collections. So, in 2008 we introduced our own eco-labelling system, which we called our Leaves label, and in 2017 we will be updating our labelling system and Gudrun’s Good Guide.

Bright, subtle, bold and soft – the essential long-sleeved top in its range of colourways coordinates and offsets the entire collection palette. Tone-on-tone or in bold contrasts – we aim to amaze and revive. And in a choice of six amazing combinations.
