Last summer, I spent a few weeks in New York. At the Metropolitan Museum, I saw the magnificent garments in the “The Art of Native America” exhibition. Typically crafted from natural hide, some with the fur intact, and featuring beaded waistcoats and bags, and garments woven from thick blanket wool.
My sketchbook is full of influences. A fusion of kimono-style garments, Native American influences and Indian block prints. The costume-inspired pieces feature circles, triangles and stripes. Most of the designs are far removed from the original influences. Amazing how the brain works!
