Artists have made this neighbourhood their own. The building facades are painted with murals of imaginative patterns and designs featuring people, plants and animals. The fantastic murals painted in greens, blues and black and white make amazing backgrounds for our collections.

When Gudrun comes to New Delhi, she loves to visit this place which is constantly evolving. There are always new murals waiting to be admired. 
 

Discover the towering bamboo groves, the lush, leafy banana plants and the beautiful flowering ginkgo biloba trees.
 

Its beautiful reddish-brown stone columns are decorated with carvings. Try to get here at seven in the morning when they open the site for visitors.
 

Quench your thirst with a Kingfisher, Indian beer, and tuck into a delicious meal with kulfi, Indian cardamom ice-cream, for dessert.
 

A monument commemorating the soldiers who died in the First World War. We thought that we would be the only ones here at sunrise, but the place was already bustling with people out jogging, walking or playing with the dogs that had slept here all night. 
 

Gudrun cannot resist going in and buying a hand-knotted silk scarf. Some great cafés too where you can enjoy a salad and a glass of sweet lime soda. Or refreshing cold coffee with ice cream.
 

If you’re going as a group – book a table in advance! When the heat is not too oppressive, it’s lovely to sit outside on the terrace. Spice Route – a beautifully decorated restaurant that is like a work of art. Serving tasty butter chicken, dal, spicy lamb curries and other delicious Indian dishes.

The Imperial has a charming bookshop too. Lots of fascinating books on Indian textiles, beautiful picture books from different parts of India.

The pool at the Imperial is an impressive size – and lovely to swim in if you can afford to stay at this stunning colonial hotel. Once a tired and charming hotel, now magnificent with its gleaming brass and mahogany. And far too expensive. 
 

Here you eat breakfast and dinner together with other guests at a long table outside. A lovely pool for anyone who fancies a morning swim. Charming rooms and good air-conditioning.
 

My favourite boutiques are Anokhi (block-printed clothes/home textiles), Fabindia (more traditional Indian clothes, crockery and home textiles) and some small Indian designer labels.
 

 

The Santa Luzia terrace is adorned with these stunning blue and white glazed tiles and also offers a breathtaking view of the city.

The world-famous MAAT Museum of Art, Architecture and Technology is a gigantic, futuristic building constructed of white tiles that make it really stand out. A stark contrast to Lisbon’s otherwise more historic architecture.

A visit to the royal, fairytale-like village of Sintra is a must. It is a magical setting with unique buildings surrounded by green forests and a palace that was once home to Portugal’s royal families. Exploring the area by tuk-tuk or taking a ride on the classic trams of Lisbon is an experience in itself. And don’t miss Lisbon’s trendy district of Alcantara, with its dynamic mix of graffiti, cool shops and exciting restaurants.

 

We stop outside Son Viscos, a golden-brown stone house that nestles on the hillside. A lush green garden stretches between the ancient stone walls below. Scents of thyme, rosemary and mint fill the air and tall vegetables sway gently in the breeze.

 

Son Viscos is one of many agritourism places to stay in Spain. The house was once an old ruin, but has now been transformed into a B&B surrounded by gardens. Michael Robert, the proprietor, tells us how they discovered ancient stone paths and walls hidden beneath the undergrowth. The garden is now brimming with cacti, herbs and vegetables. We are treated to a delicious Spanish paella, followed by ensaïmada – a sweet, coil-shaped bun that is a speciality of Mallorca.

 

The island is home to the Joan Miró Foundation and museum, which honours the life and work of the legendary artist. Miró lived and worked here. Different parts of his life are depicted in three unique buildings. Gudrun’s watercolours have been inspired by the enchanting architecture and the cacti that grow all around. There’s a workshop with colourful doors, a magical studio dating from the 18th century where he created his sculptures, and a large gallery where some of his most prominent works of art are on display.

 

It is almost as if Miró’s world and the dynamic colours of Gudrun’s clothes are fused in perfect harmony.

 

The scenery is breathtaking, with deep fjords and snowcapped mountains. Here you really experience the grandeur of nature, with its breathtaking panorama of mountains and sea. To reach Vesterålen, we have to fly there in small planes and make two changes. We travel by bus to the coast where a large, open rigid inflatable boat takes us to Finvåg – an experience like no other!

 

We are greeted by Unni and Asle Sordahl, whose home is a charming renovated schoolhouse that dates from 1864 and offers a fascinating insight into the history of the place. They tell us about the traditions and rich culture of the Vesterålen islands. We are also served fish, meat, vegetables and berries, all local delicacies and a delightful experience for the palate.

 

It feels like we have travelled back in time when we visit the fishing village of Tinden. Fishermen have struggled to make a living here since the 1500s and the renovated buildings bear witness to the hardships they endured.

 

Exploring Vesterålen entails going out to sea. For a chance to spot whales and observe majestic white-tailed eagles soaring over the fjords. The constantly changing weather – shifting suddenly from bright sunshine to stormy blizzards – makes every moment an adventure.
