Making a shoe – a true handicraft

A simple sketch is always the start of a new shoe, but making one requires a thorough understanding of the entire manufacturing process. A lot of pieces have to fall into place before the real product sketch is finished! The prototypes for the last and sole are made digitally these days, and printed out with a 3D printer. This process used to be even more hands-on when the prototype was modeled in wood.

To cast the sole, rubber is poured into a metal mold on a large spinning platform equipped with soles of all sizes. The sole can also be punched out from a layer of rubber or plastic. Sometimes we make soles out of cork from cork trees, which grow in Portugal. Each sole/heel is sawn one after the next with a band saw.

For leather shoes, the leather has to be tanned and prepared. This is a long process that takes place in big wooden drums without chrome or heavy metals – in accordance with the EU’s REACH regulation on chemicals. These days, you can also digitally print the leather. The patterns are printed directly onto the leather, exactly as if they had been printed on paper. The advantage of this method is that it doesn’t require any water.

Iron punches are made for each shoe component and each shoe style. After the components have been punched out, the shoe is sewn together and given eyelets and buckles. The sewn shoe is placed on the last and stretched into shape. The finished rubber sole is glued on. Finally, the shoe goes into an oven to secure its shape with the help of the last. Last, each pair of shoes is checked, the labels are applied, and the shoes are packed in our fabric bags to be sent us, and eventually to you!

To ensure complete satisfaction, we recommend checking your measurements and comparing them with our sizing table.

Measuring tips:
Take measurements directly on your body. The measuring tape should be close to your body without squeezing.

BUST: Measure your bust at the fullest point and preferably wearing your favorite bra.

WAIST: Measure your waist at the narrowest point.

HIPS: Measure your hips at the widest point across your seat.

Our fit

We like mixing figure-fit with more generously cut fashion. That's why we have four different types of tailoring. You'll find information on the different types of fit in the detailed descriptions of each item. The choice of material also influences the amount of movement allowed by a garment. Knits and jersey-knits have more give in them than woven, less stretchy materials. That's why our weaves are often more generously tailored.

The garment is close fitting, with a maximum of 2½ inches room for movement around the bust and a maximum of 1½ inches around the hips.

Standard fit
The garment has 3-6½ inches room for movement around the bust and 1½-4½ inches around the hips.

Generous fit
A free and easy fit with at least 6½ inches room for movement around the bust and 5 inches or more around the hips.

Extra generous fit
Lots of room for movement, 12 inches or more around the bust.

With feet on the earth - textile, leather, patterned and colorful

We make shoes for all kinds of feet: wide, narrow, long, short. But no two feet are the same, so it isn’t an easy task. We also want to design shoes that work from early spring to high summer, and that express many different personalities. Colorful and cheerful, subdued and simple, warm and cool. But above all, we want to make shoes for anyone who wants to stand solidly rooted on this earth – because shoes are made for walking!
