Holiday cards

A video showing hands decorating hand-painted Christmas baubles and other hanging decorations from Gudrun Sjödén in a warm crafting setting with dried oranges and ribbons.

What to do – step by step:

You need:
•    Pre-folded cards or thick watercolor paper
•    Watercolor paints
•    Brushes in various sizes
•    Water cup
•    Paint palette or a small plate for blending paint
•    Pencil and eraser (for light sketching, optional)
•    A cup to use as a template for the circle.
•   Protection for the table, such as newspaper or something else to place under your work

1. Fold the paper to make a card, or place watercolor paper in a suitable size on a protected surface.
2. Carefully sketch your idea in pencil – such as a circle if you want to make an ornament.
3. Blend the colors you want to use on the palette.
4. Paint the large areas first. Begin with the background and bigger shapes, and let the paint dry a bit between layers.
5. Paint your small patterns, outlines and accents.
6. Leave the card flat until the paint is dry and does not spread.
7. When everything is dry, you can write a personalized holiday greeting inside or on the back of the card.

Tips!
•    Play with simple motifs.
•    Repeat the same motif in different colors – it will go faster but still feel personal.
•    Work in layers. Let every layer of paint dry before adding the next one for clearer shapes and less mess.
•    Paint several cards at the same time. Work in little “series” – when one card is drying, continue painting the next one. Efficient and fun!
