Coimbatore is a city in India where every textile imaginable is produced, woven, printed and knit. Gudrun visited this bustling city before working on the fall collection. She wanted to understand how it all works, both on a small and large scale. In Sweden, she sketches an abundance of checks and stripes. Gudrun combines watercolor painting with lines in colored pencil. The sketches are very similar to the result on woven fabric. A good, simple technique. At small weaving mills, so-called bit looms are made – little samples of the fabric. These offer a first impression of what the fabric will be like. After that, a few sample meters are woven at these smaller weaving mills, where large quantities aren’t required. If we had ordered several hundred meters, the production would take place at huge factories and on fully automated machines. That could mean 2,000 meters per colorway – but we aren’t making that kind of quantity for a collection like “Coimbatore.”

Checked clothing

Checks from around the world, on a versatile garment – you can never have too many! It’s been so much fun to develop this fabric together with passionate craftspeople. Gudrun’s inspiration comes from all the colors and patterns of the world.

Charming checks in Coimbatore
In India, skilled artisans weave spectacular checked patterns on simple looms. Inspired by this tradition, we’ve delighted in creating a variety of woven checked designs for this collection. By sewing larger and smaller pieces together, we’ve crafted a playful mix of colors and styles. These garments also include a cozy cardigan in an alpaca blend with checks, of course, and a dotted jersey top. And don’t miss the kimono of the world – one of our all-time favorite pieces.
